Search TipsYou can search for items at BarristerItems.com in a number of ways: General Search and Advanced Search. General Search Tips General Search and Advanced Search both search our entire item database. General Search is a single-field search found on the top navigational bar on any page on the BarristerItems.com web site. On that same top navigational bar, you will find a link for our Advanced Search page, which allows you to search on multiple specific fields and apply search filters. Searching by Title Enter all or part of the title you are looking for. You can leave out words such as "a", "an," or "the." The search engine will try to find items that have all the words you entered in the title. If no items are found with all the words, the search engine will try to find items with some of the words. Searching by Author Enter the last name of the author you are looking for. Searching by Keyword The keyword search looks for all the words you entered relating to the title, author, subjects, and categories of items. For example, if you search on "Federal Rules of Civil Procedure," the search results page will display all items that contain " Federal Rules of Civil Procedure " in the title, author name, or item description. You can be as general (e.g., "law") or as specific (e.g., "European Union law") as you wish. Be aware that if you select "keyword," your search results may be very long. You should choose title, author, or ISBN if you know that is what you are looking for. Searching by ISBN Enter the ten-digit ISBN (International Standard Item Number) you are looking for. This search will bring you to the one item with that exact ISBN number, if it is in our database. You can enter the ISBN with or without hyphens. Formatting Your Search It is not necessary to use any special characters in formatting your search. Simply enter the words you are looking for. Quotation marks, plus signs, or Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) will be ignored by the search engine. The search engine is case-insensitive. You can enter your search in all capitals, all lowercase, or mixed case. General Search 1. Go to the search field at the top of most pages in the BarristerItems.com web site. 2. Type the desired title, author, keyword, or ISBN in the text field, and click on the “Search” button 3. The search results will display a list of items that best match your search criteria, arranged in order of relevance, starting with the most relevant search results. ISBN searches will bring you to the one item with that exact ISBN number, if it is in our database. Advanced Search The Advanced Search form allows you to search on one or more fields. Searching on more than one field may narrow your results to the exact item or items you are looking for. Search by title, author, or keyword 1. Click on the Advanced Search link at the top of most pages in the BarristerItems.com web site. 2. Type the desired title, author, publisher, and/or keyword(s) in the text field as described in the General Search Tips. 3. You can enter information into one or more fields, but it is not required. The more specific the information you enter, the more exact your search results may be. 4. If desired, you can narrow your search further by selecting an option from one or more of the two dropdown menus: Legal Topic and Format. Legal Topic -- narrows your search to only items in a specific legal topic area. Format -- narrows your search to only items in a specific format, such as paperback or hardcover. 5. When you have entered all the relevant information, click on the "Search" button to start your search. Search by ISBN 1. Click on the Advanced Search link at the top of most pages in the Item Store. 2. Type the ten-digit ISBN (International Standard Item Number) in the ISBN search field. 3. Click on the "Search" button to start your search. This search will only return the one item with that exact ISBN number, if it is in our database. Search Results The search results page displays information about the item(s) that match your search. If the search engine isn't able to find any exact matches for your search, the page will display information about items that may be close to what you were looking for. Click on the title of the item to read more about that item, or to order the item. Search results are presented in top matching order, in order of relevance, starting with the most relevant items. Search Results Questions The list of results is too long. How can I narrow this list? You can narrow the list of search results by using a search filter as described in the Advanced Search section. The list of results is too short. How can I get more results? If you have entered too much search information, it is likely that the search engine was not able to find many items that met all your search criteria. I didn't get any results. What did I do wrong?
