This casebook is designed with an emphasis on accessibility. It includes many discussion problems and questions focusing on real-world application. It also gives students a solid grounding in the basic principles of administrative law that they might come across in regulatory practice. While the casebook pays due attention to the historical evolution of legal doctrine in certain areas, it focuses more heavily on current standards. Administrative law as a subject matter encompasses some very interesting theoretical discussions. Rather than remain strictly theoretical to the point of bordering on encyclopedic, this casebook tends toward the more practical, while still including enough reference to theory to enable a professor who wants to introduce more theoretical discussion into the classroom to do so. The casebook includes sufficient material to support an advanced administrative law course taught to students with previous exposure to the regulatory state.

The new edition incorporates new developments through the Supreme Court's 2021-22 term, including excerpts from United States v. Arthrex, Inc. (2021) regarding the appointment power and final decisionmaking authority, Biestek v. Berryhill (2019) regarding judicial review of factfinding in agency adjudications, West Virginia v. EPA (2022) regarding statutory interpretation and the major questions doctrine, TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez (2021) regarding standing doctrine. The new edition also includes new materials regarding privatization of government functions, acting agency officers, and much more.
