The Law Simulation Series: Tort Law is part of a series of simulated, experiential learning environments designed to provide students with an interactive law office environment suitable for the development and refinement of competencies needed for the real-world legal workplace.

Working as an intern at the Anytown, USA law firm of Murphy, Miller & Dorn the student will be introduced to how a busy litigation firm handles personal injury client files. The student will assist in mounting a defense against a negligence claim, evaluate an intentional tort claim and help initiate a lawsuit grounded in strict/product liability.

During his days at the office, the student will encounter avatars of a law partner, the office manager, a paralegal and an administrative assistant who will guide the student’s work. Through audio and video files the student will sit in on meetings and learn directly from other law office personnel how draft pleadings, prepare discovery and evaluate potential claims.

Among the skills The Law Simulation Series: Tort Law will develop and refine are:

  • Understanding the role of the paralegal in the delivery of tort law and tort law-related legal services from both the plaintiff and defense side
  • Knowledge of the underlying theories of tort law and litigation
  • Ability to perform legal research relevant to tort law and tort theory
  • Ability to draft legal documents relating to tort litigation
  • Ability to provide litigation support services to trial counsel
  • Ability to perform critical analysis of client legal issues
  • Ability to practice effective time management
